Providing a C.U.R.E

Doctors without Walls

TX C.U.R.E.’s first of its kind in the nation, Doctors Without Walls™ under the direction of Dr. Lovelace Quarshie, DNP, APRN, LA, RN, brings volunteer doctors and medical professionals from our partner organizations to the world of the incarcerated who have special situations where an outside medical professional evaluation is in the best interest of the inmate; low to no cost medical treatment to their families and the inmate upon release; and mental health programs to the children of the incarcerated between 8 and 18 years old. Tx C.U.R.E., Inc., (C.U.R.E.) is a 501(c)(3) private charity focusing on criminal justice/family advocacy for those incarcerated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Since 2018, members of our Board have been engaged in advocacy to include working as a paralegal for attorneys handling prisoner parole and civil rights cases, and pushing for Legislative changes. There have been multiple times when unique medical situations arose involving the family of an inmate suffering from certain medical conditions and the family felt it was in the best interest of the inmate to have the situation independently evaluated and or treated by an outside physician.

Youth Ambassadors

TX C.U.R.E. sees the need for family bonding, peer and mental health support, ministry, and parent-child relationships during incarceration. The TX C.U.R.E. Youth Ambassadors Program™ was originally created to meet this challenge with the youth of the incarcerated, focusing on the children between 7 and 17, 18 if they are still in school. In August, 2024, by request, our Youth Ambassadors Program has opened its doors to Texas CASA children and children of parents on probation. In partnership with Real Vida Ministries, Backpack Friends, and Infinite Potential Counseling. The Youth Ambassadors Program™, is a  therapeutic, family counseling and spiritual youth program starting with the Central Texas counties of Travis, Williamson, Burnet, Hays, Blanco Bastrop, Llano, and Bexar with a goal of becoming a statewide program by the end of 2025. On December 7, 2018, the Texas Tribune published a Report highlighting the trauma experienced by families of Texas incarcerated.  According to the Report, there are approximately 500,000 children of incarcerated parents in both jails and prisons around the State. As of December 1st, 2023, just in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) alone, there are approximately 130,600 current inmates in the TDCJ and there are another approximately 15,000 in the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in Texas alone. According to the Texas Center for Justice and Equity, 81 percent of women in Texas prisons are mothers, and women are generally more likely to be the primary caretakers of their children. For successful reunification to take place, parents need stable housing, employment, and sometimes public benefits; however, these are the resources that are often hardest to come by for people in the reentry process. An added difficulty is the lack of contact that parents may have had with their children during incarceration, due to visitation limitations or long distances from prisons to their family homes. Mental health and welfare of the children of incarcerated is paramount under the Youth Ambassadors Program™

Veteran Advocacy

TX C.U.R.E. is working to ensure that incarcerated veterans and their families maintain what few benefits they have left are afforded them during incarceration.  We do this through advocacy in providing second opinions on medical situations for our veterans when necessary, and are working to ensure incarcerated veterans are properly identified and enrolled in veterans treatment/residential programs within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.   Our goal is to ensure the veterans have a pathway to success in preparation for parole and reentry, including housing, education and other veteran benefit entitlements.

Working in partnership with the Dallas Community College, the Veterans Administration, through Pell grants and VA education benefits, theology seminaries, TX C.U.R.E. ensures all prisoners and treatment residents are afforded higher education certification and college credits for their work time.  Additional benefits include traditional college courses in an effort to focus on a better life through a college degree.

Family Assistance

TX C.U.R.E. takes the lead in assisting families to ensure that those who qualify for no cost-low cost medical care and other benefits are enrolled with the right organizations that can provide the needed care and benefits, educating the families on policies and procedures and the day-to-day workings of prison life, communication and understanding the law and their rights.  We also focus on assisting families who’s loved one is nearing parole, and providing much needed counseling to help them to prepare for their reentry into the community.

Our new Family Practice Program™ has partnered with Samaritan, Sacred Heart Clinic and Rota-Care El Paso to provide life changing information and direction in attaining family care for those left behind.
